1) COMMIT: make a commitment to yourself to practice meditating six days a week. To realize the benefits of meditation consistent practice is essential. Meditation is a learned skill. You will improve your ability to achieve a core energy state with repetition over time. Practicing six days per week gives a one day break to keep your practice fresh.
2) SCHEDULE: establish a set time for your daily practice. First thing in the morning or last thing at night are best to maximize your mental focus. First thing in the morning sets a positive reference point for the day. Last thing at night processes and clears the events of the day and puts you in a state that is conducive to sleeping well.
3) PLACE: practice in a space that is quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions (door closed if inside, TV and phone turned off, let others know not to interrupt you, etc.)
4) DURATION: decide the minimum amount of time that you will practice before you begin. Put a clock in front of you so that you can check your time easily without disrupting your meditative state. Make note of the time that you will finish before you start so your mind doesn't have to calculate when you look at the clock.
5) SEAT: for seated meditation make sure that you have a seat that is the right height and is comfortable to sit on. A good height sets your hips level with or slightly above the height of your knees.
6) READ AND RE-READ THE INSTRUCTIONS: follow the four parts of each meditation in order. You may want to print out the instructions and have them with you until you've memorized the cues in sequence. Another suggestion is to record yourself reading the cues and play them back to start your meditation session.
7) PURPOSE: have a clear intention for your practice. Know what you want to get out of it. This will help you stay with it and help you get the most out your practice when you do it.
8) KEEP TRACK: I highly recommend that you make notes about your practice to make it more substantial and to process the results. The Daily Practice Log is a tool to help you commit to your practice, record your results, and keep you on track.
